7 Adjustments for an Ideal Driving Posture
One of the major physical stressors that takes a toll on people’s health is sitting. We don’t think much of it because we aren’t “doing” anything. However, some health experts are now calling sitting the new smoking.
Sitting is obviously not good; it actually puts 4 times our body weight in forces on the discs in our lower back. Over time, this can add up and become destructive. Sitting is to chiropractors as sugar is to dentists. We know eating one sugary food is not going to destroy our teeth, but over time, it will break them down and cause cavities. By the time we feel the pain of a cavity, it is pretty late in the process. Similarly, sitting one day won’t kill you, but the accumulation of sitting for 6+ hours per day for years will cause plenty of stress and strain on the spine. We usually don’t feel pain until significant damage has been done.
A major source of sitting during an average person’s day is when he/she is driving. We get plenty of questions in the office about how to drive with better posture and ergonomics to reduce the negative consequences of this physical stressor. Our friends at Sloane Automotive shared this great infographic with us, and we want to pass it on to you. These are 7 great tips that you can implement to reduce the negative effects of driving and improve your overall body function.
One of our goals is to teach our patients how to reduce the stresses on their bodies so that they can avoid aches, pains, and dysfunctions and express better overall function. However, sometimes you can’t avoid them. For example, you may have an hour and a half commute and then sit at a desk for the rest of the day. For the stresses that you can’t avoid, we can help optimize the function of your nervous system, diminish the impact of the stresses on your body, and allow your body to function at its maximum potential.
