The SHIELD Plan to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease
The neurological epidemic continues, affecting millions of our neighbors. There is a quick and relatively simple plan for brain health on the Dr. Oz website, called the SHIELD Plan to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease — the plain English, trade at shoulder level approach, simple enough for anyone to embrace and apply is appreciated.
The originator of these straightforward distinctions is Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, director of the Alzheimer’s Genome Project and co-author with Deepak Chopra of “Super Brain” and other significant books on genetic, immune and brain wellness.
The “S” in SHIELD stands for “Sleep” – amyloid plaque is generated to protect brain cells, but too much plaque hurts the brain and nerves. Plaque production slows down during sleep, when the brain cleans itself up and eliminates excess plaque — that’s why you need to sleep 7-8 hours every night.
The “H” stands for “Handle Stress” – for example, meditation, breathing, and walks outside can help.
The “I” stands for “Interact With Others” – avoid loneliness and stay connected with friends, family, and co-workers, because the social engagement keeps you fresh and aware.
The “E” stands for “Exercise” – get your heart rate up and reduce the odds of cardiovascular disease with 100-150 minutes of personal training every week.
The “L” stands for “Learn New Things” – as expected, mental exercise diminishes cognitive decline.
The “D” stands for “Diet” – for most of us, eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and olive oil, with less red meat and processed foods, sets a healthy environment for the brain, as well as the heart.
You may be wondering where chiropractic fits into this scheme – at the very least, it is directly related to diminishing physical stress. Yet, Dr. Heidi Haavik’s research associates adjustments to improved brain function. You could also say that since adjustments serve to enhance spinal function, which Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist Roger Sperry says contributes significantly to the nutrition and stimulation of the central nerve system, chiropractic care clearly boosts the well-being of the brain.
So moving forward, continue to get adjusted (or start if you’ve never been adjusted), but also think about the SHIELD method for fighting against Alzheimer’s Disease. Your health will benefit because of it.
